When I tried to loosen the nut to the trap the 1 1/4" drain pipe that goes into the wall broke off. It was badly corroded and was likely to break soon anyway. Cut the pipe with the blade of a hacksaw, then start chipping at it with a hammer and chisel, it should pop out (I do this with toilet flanges all the time).

Be sure to put some paper towels or a rag in the hole first so it doesn't go down the drain! Maybe then you can thread into it again? I'm not familiar with metal pipes like that at the wall, but you may have to cut a square opening around. I removed the P-trap from underneath my bathroom sink and cleaned out a messy clog. (Blech!)
